Background of the study
Social media has emerged as a catalyst for linguistic innovation in Nigeria, with Facebook groups serving as dynamic communities where new language practices are born. Within these groups, users engage in creative language production, adopting and adapting linguistic forms that reflect contemporary cultural and social identities (Ibrahim, 2023). The conversational nature of Facebook group interactions promotes experimentation with syntax, morphology, and vocabulary, leading to the emergence of innovative expressions that often diverge from traditional norms. These digital innovations are shaped by collective user practices, group dynamics, and the platform’s affordances, which encourage rapid feedback and iterative language development (Okafor, 2024). This study examines the specific linguistic innovations that arise within Nigerian Facebook groups, focusing on the trends that drive language change in these online communities. By analyzing group chats, posts, and comments, the research aims to uncover the mechanisms through which social media influences language creativity and contributes to the evolution of Nigerian discourse (Adebayo, 2023). This investigation not only documents emerging linguistic forms but also provides insights into how digital environments foster a dynamic and adaptive language culture.
Statement of the problem
Despite widespread recognition of linguistic innovation in Nigerian social media, there is limited research on how Facebook group trends specifically contribute to this phenomenon. Most studies focus on general online communication without examining the unique, community-driven language practices within Facebook groups (Chukwu, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of the processes that underpin language change in digital communities. Without targeted investigation, the transformative impact of Facebook group interactions on traditional language norms remains insufficiently explored, limiting the development of effective theoretical models for digital linguistic innovation (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the impact of Facebook group trends on linguistic innovation in Nigeria. The findings will offer valuable insights into digital language evolution, guiding educators, linguists, and social media strategists in understanding and harnessing the transformative power of online communication (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on Facebook group interactions among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline communication practices, ensuring a concentrated analysis of group-driven linguistic innovation.
